It has been a little over four years since we made the life-changing decision to move on board Sweet Hope, and we have not looked back once. This move has unequivocally been one of the best decisions we have ever made.
Since we embarked on this adventure, our lives have become remarkably simpler and more fulfilling. Much like migratory birds, we chart our course with the changing seasons. During autumn and winter, we head towards the southern parts of the Baltic Sea, where the climate is milder. Come spring, we make our way back to the familiar shores of Finland. Through this nomadic lifestyle, we have forged friendships with fellow liveaboards who share our passion for boating and the sea. Every reunion is filled with joy and camaraderie as we swap stories and experiences.
Over the years, we have made numerous improvements to Sweet Hope, ensuring that she remains not just our home, but a vessel of comfort and functionality. Our latest addition is the installation of courtesy lights outside, adding a touch of elegance to our floating abode. Mika’s fascination with Shelly devices has led to their installation in every corner. With the aid of Shelly’s and Home Assistant, we can monitor e.g. our SubZero’s electricity consumption or even lower our anchor using our mobile phones—a feature that proves invaluable when we dock in natural harbors, securing the stern to the shore and the bow at anchor.
We also take pride in doing most of the work ourselves, rarely needing assistance from others.
Our most significant purchase to date has been acquiring a SeaDoo FishPro as a second tender. This versatile craft has added a whole new dimension to our lives, allowing us to indulge in fishing trips with ease and enjoy countless hours of fun on the water. Last summer, the SeaDoo became an integral part of my daily routine. I often started my workdays with exhilarating rides, much to the amusement of fellow port dwellers. I vividly recall a particular incident when a man approached me as I prepared to embark on a solo journey. He seemed incredulous at the sight of a woman driving a SeaDoo alone, especially with a considerable load on board. Despite his scepticism, I confidently set off on my nine-mile trip, leaving him watching in awe.
Being liveaboards has brought us closer to nature and allowed us to discover new places and meet like-minded individuals. While some destinations may be less accessible, such as stores that are far from the shore, we have learned to adapt and equip ourselves accordingly. The rewards of this lifestyle far outweigh the challenges, and we are continually reminded of the many positives that come with living on a boat.
In essence, our decision to embrace life on Sweet Hope has been a journey of discovery, friendship, and personal growth. We cherish every moment and look forward to many more years of exploration and adventure.
